  • Overview

    The Corporate Safety Manger is the primary support for Smithfield's plant safety departments. This individual will work closely with plant management as well as corporate operations and engineering. This position will have oversight of safety for approximately 7 Smithfield plant locations. Traveling to these locations on a regular basis is an expectation that prospective candidates are willing to perform.

    Smithfield has a mature Safety Management System known as the Smithfield Injury Prevention System or SIPS. This system was developed with ISO standards in mind. Everything within Smithfield's approach to safety fits inside of this system. A successful candidate will be able to comprehend and assist plant locations in applying the principles of SIPS.

    Responsibilities

    • Creates, supports and implements strategies and initiatives to establish and improve overall safety performance and compliance.
    • Develops and maintains OSHA compliance for written programs, training and plant conditions. Conducts internal audits for compliance to OSHA standards, company standards and policies/procedures.
    • Establishes and maintains compliance with Federal, State, and Local safety permits, reports, regulations and compliance monitoring.
    • Acts as a primary interface with local, state and federal regulatory commissions regarding safety practices.
    • Trains personnel in proper safety procedures.
    • Leads root cause analysis and preventive/corrective action follow-up.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university and 7+ years’ relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
    • Bachelor's Degree, preferred.
    • Minimum of 4+ years’ experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.
    • Experience with ISO management systems such as ISO 14001, 9001, 45001 and/or OHSAS 18000.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
    • Strong decision making and problem solving skills.
    • Excellent planning and organizational skills with demonstrated multi-tasking and project management skills.
    • Strong attention to detail, innovation and ability to operate autonomously.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
    • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
    • Must be able to travel up to 75% of the time.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • May provide leadership and guidance to Plant Safety Managers.
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
    • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

    • Primarily a Corporate working environment. When in the plant, the environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
    • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the plant production area.
