    The Logistical Services Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of Transportation Staff who are responsible for transportation and distribution of our products. The primary focus is to ensure consistent, efficient, reliable and timely service levels to customers.  This position will also bridge the communication link between transportation providers, sales, brokers and customers. It also includes problem resolution in support of  providing excellent service to Smithfield customers.


    This position is a Friday through Monday position with working hours from 6AM - 5 PM.




    • Develops business relationships with third party carriers and coordinates with them to provide the expected services and work through any potential issues.
    • Utilize truck tracking software to track and monitor shipments, identify any potential issues, and provide resolutions.
    • Communicate potential service failures and resolutions to sales team , brokers, and customers.
    • Approve of unloading and detention charges along with data entry and tracking.
    • Review and process charges from our customers for the unloading of their product at their facilities.
    • Approve (or not approve) any and all charges as they occur and relate to transporting of products.
    • Responsible for entering each charge into the database and completing weekly reporting.
    • Make decisions on disposition of product and re-delivery when delivery appointments are missed.
    • If a transportation provider misses a delivery appointment this position is responsible to take care of the products and make arrangements to reschedule the delivery to the customer.
    • Track and report on Spotlight Accounts; these are accounts that have experienced recent service issues requiring special handling for a certain period of time.
    • When a customer is put on the Spotlight Program this position follows up to make sure our transportation provider is on board with the requirements.
    • This position tracks the progress and results for a Spotlight Customer for a designated period of time. 5% Scheduling
    • Assists and coordinates with our transportation providers in securing delivery appointments to ensure the product gets delivered based on our customers request.
    • Resolving appointment issues on scheduled deliveries.
    • Planning, tendering, and scheduling loads.

    • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in Logistics or related field and 2+years’ of experience in the trucking industry with perishables; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
    • Bachelor's Degree, preferred.
    • Experience acting as a lead by providing training, guidance or mentoring to less experienced staff or managing processes and projects, preferred.
    • CSCMP certification issued by the APICS organization, preferred.
    • Experience in understanding and interpreting DOT and State and Federal regulations preferred. 
    • Strong understanding of load build and shipment tendering functions.
    • Exceptional Customer Service skills.
    • Ability to evaluate different transportation problems and find solutions that meet customer expectations while balancing costs.
    • Strong experience in Microsoft Word and Excel, inclusive of spreadsheets and pivot tables.
    • High level of organizational planning, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Highly attentive to detail and accuracy.
    • Strong negotiation skills.
    • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
    • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • Responsible for supervision of a team in the Transportation Department.
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
    • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees addressing complaints and resolving problems.
