  • Overview

    The Maintenance Refrigeration Operator will be responsible for the daily monitoring and maintenance of all ammonia based refrigeration systems including preventative maintenance, repair and reconstruction of all refrigeration and HVAC equipment. 


    • Operate/monitor the ammonia refrigeration system and monitoring device and Process Safety Management documentation, work order/inventory control.
    • Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components. Adjust or replace worn or defective mechanisms and parts, and re-assemble repaired systems.
    • Test lines, components and connections for leaks.
    • Interpret and understand blue prints and schematics
    • Must be able to wear and maintain all safety equipment and breathing apparatus.
    • Requires rotating weekends and being on-call as needed.
      • Conserves maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
      • Provides mechanical maintenance information by answering questions and requests.
      • Prepares mechanical maintenance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
      • Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
      • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations thru Good Housekeeping (GMPs) and cleaning/organizing your workstation and workbench to 5S standards. Follow appropriate procedures for universal hazardous waste disposal, oily rags, light bulbs, batteries and used oil, etc.
      • Follow GMP’s by cleaning your tools, sanitizing tools after repairs, change sleeves from line to line and wear apron.
      • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
      • Receive and complete non-routine and creating work orders for breakdowns and unplanned repairs.


      • Perform work orders, sign, and date work orders by entering hours. Return completed work orders to the maintenance supervisor and perform data-entry at the end of the shift into SAP computer software.
      • Perform any other duties related to repairing or improving operating systems or designated by your supervisor.
      • From one (1) year of assignment, must pass in-house (Ammonia) system quiz
      • Must be physically able to pass/wear a respirator and use a self-contained breathing apparatus with annual re-test and certification.


      • Participate in the Hazardous Material Response Team (activities, responsibilities and training); this includes wearing a hazmat suit.


      • Operate a forklift, boom-lift and scissor lift. (acquire licenses)


      • Must be confined space certified.


      • Learn and perform as a back-up for the waste water treatment operator

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  Three to five years related experience and/or training.  Operator I certification preferred, but not necessary. 


    LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


    REASONING:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exits.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, grasp, or feel; substantial movements (motion) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; reaching and pulling with hands and arms.  The employee is required to stand for sustained periods of time; balancing is required.  Frequent walking is required. The employee must frequently lift up to 50 pounds; Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally.  Occasional pushing of 25 pounds or more, and pushing up to 100 pounds of force is required.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    The employee will be exposed to temperatures ranging from 38 –110 degrees.  The noise level in the work environment is sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.  Personal Protective Equipment is required.
