  • Overview

    The Public Relations Manager will manage the planning and execution of approved brand public relations plans to secure earned media by translating Smithfield Foods’ brands’ business strategies into innovative, creative communication vehicles that fosters a positive image and grows business. This will require collaboration with various internal departments and external customers, vendors, and talent partners, to ensure the smooth planning and execution of projects and programs such as cause marketing and product-specific media bureaus. Frequent nights and weekends, and domestic travel to various corporate offices, events, customers, and industry meetings.


    • Manage the brand public relations planning process and implementation of approved public relations plans with attention to detail, budget, deadlines, brand voice, and corporate principles, working in close coordination with brand teams.
    • Collaborate with various internal departments and external customers, vendors, and talent to ensure successful completion of projects.
    • Ensure the meeting/exceeding of expected results. Manage the tracking and reporting of results; analyze the success of each effort.
    • Perform other necessary duties as needed to support marketing efforts.
    • Assist the Director by managing and developing processes, policies, and procedures.
    • Facilitate strategy development and drafting of all communications materials, route through proper approval channels, and ensure timely publication.
    • Support the planning and execution of press-driving events/campaigns from beginning to end.
    • Manage the production and hours of all PR contractors. 


    • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university and 5+ years' relevant experience, required.
    • Master's Degree preferred.
    • Progressive experience working on marketing, public relations, media relations, and communication programs, required.
    • Agency experience and management preferred.
    • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel extensively, 35% or more.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures of public and media relations, corporate communications, and marketing
    • Ability to work autonomously with little direction, managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
    • Possess a wide degree of creativity and latitude with organizational, time-management, and planning skills. Must be resourceful, adaptable, detail oriented, and deadline driven.
    • Confident communicator and presenter; must have excellent verbal and written skills.
    • Function as respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
    • Ability to prioritize projects and produce high-quality and quantity output that adds value to the company.
    • Measurable success with pitching newsworthy stories and securing positive media coverage.
    • High levels of professionalism, judgment, tact, discretion, poise, and diplomacy.
    • Internet-savvy and proficient using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.
    • On-camera media experience a plus.
    • Knowledge of Consumer packaged goods (CPG) business, preferred.
